PURCHASE LIMITS / GUIDE 07

How to set Shopify collection limits

Set a combined quantity, value, or weight limit for Shopify collections and test which cart items count.

2 min read

A collection limit combines all matching cart items from the selected collections and checks their total quantity, value, or weight against a minimum or maximum. It does not assign a separate cap to each product or collection. Use a product limit if each product needs its own cap.

Create the rule

  1. Open Limits → Select limit type → Collection limits. Create a rule and enter a Rule name.
  2. Use Choose collections to select the target collections. Check that they contain the intended products.
  3. Under Limit type, choose total quantity, value, or weight in collections, then enter a minimum, maximum, or both.
  4. Configure customer tags, login requirements, start and end times, purchase frequency, and warning timing where needed.
  5. Turn on the rule's Enable checkout validation if an invalid checkout must be blocked. Save the rule, then save the relevant message in Translation.

Example: At most three collection items

Select a Summer collection and set Maximum quantity in collections = 3. A cart with two units of Product A and one of Product B from that collection totals three and passes. Increasing B to two units makes the total four and triggers the cap. Product C outside the collection does not count. If A belongs to two selected collections, its units are still counted only once.

An existing rule keeps its original collection targets; duplicate it as a new rule to choose different collections. A zero maximum is not a way to ban a product. Use a product access rule for that purpose.

After saving, check that the rule is active. Test matching, nonmatching, and over-limit carts, and confirm the store's checkout validation is enabled.

Keep going

Use a test product or cart to check the outcome before applying this setup across your store.
