PURCHASE LIMITS / GUIDE 22

How to configure warning triggers and messages

Choose when a purchase limit warning banner appears, configure an additional message, and distinguish it from checkout blocking.

2 min read

For an order, collection, product, or variant limit, General → Action on limit → Show warning banner when chooses when the storefront banner attempts to appear: when the limit is reached or when Add to cart is clicked. Show additional message can display a separate note.

Configure the warning

  1. Open a limit rule and check its scope and minimum or maximum on General.
  2. Under Show warning banner when, select Limit reached or When Add to Cart clicked.
  3. Turn on Show additional message if another explanation is useful.
  4. Open Translation, edit the relevant limit message and Additional message, then click the page Save.
  5. Confirm that the Theme App Embed is on in the published theme. Use the verification guide on the product page, cart, and checkout.

Example: Warn on add to cart

Product A has a maximum of two units. Select When Add to Cart clicked, set the maximum quantity message to “You can buy at most 2 of this item,” and add “Contact us if you need more.” Try adding two and three units to check when the warning appears and whether three can proceed through checkout.

The warning trigger controls storefront feedback; checkout blocking requires both rule-level and shop-level checkout validation. Themes, cart drawers, and Buy now may use different display paths, so test each relevant path on your storefront. The additional note appears only when Show additional message is enabled.

For language text and variables, see message translations.
