PURCHASE LIMITS / GUIDE 13

How to require an exclusive purchase

Require a Shopify product or variant to be purchased alone and understand how that differs from a quantity cap.

2 min read

Exclusive purchase requires the matching product or variant to be bought without another distinct item in the cart. It controls which items can share a cart; it does not automatically cap the number of units. Add a separate quantity maximum if needed. You can configure it in a product limit or variant limit.

Create the rule

  1. Open Limits → Select limit type → Product limits and select the product. For only one option, open Variant limits and select that variant instead.
  2. Enable Exclusive purchase in the editor. For product rules, the exclusive-purchase quick template is also available and does not add an unrelated numeric limit.
  3. If the item must also be capped at two units, select a quantity limit and set Maximum quantity = 2.
  4. Configure customer conditions, active dates, and the exclusive-purchase message. Save the message in Translation.
  5. Activate the rule and Enable checkout validation, save, and test a cart.

Example: Product A must be bought alone

Enable exclusive purchase for Product A with no numeric cap. A cart containing two units of A alone meets the exclusive condition. Two units of A plus one unit of Product B are blocked because another product is present. If you also set Maximum quantity = 2, three units of A alone trigger the quantity cap.

By default, a product rule treats the product as the exclusive unit, so different variants of the same product can share the cart. With Apply to each variant, it distinguishes variants. A separate variant rule allows only the selected variant to share a cart with itself. Enabling exclusive purchase with All products can prevent every distinct store product from being bought with another product; Specific products is usually the intended scope.

Test one, two, and three units of the target, plus a mixed cart, then confirm checkout validation is on. If the goal is “pick one member from a group,” compare the Choose one template under purchase combinations.

Use a test product or cart to check the outcome before applying this setup across your store.
