PURCHASE LIMITS / GUIDE 19

How to limit a customer's purchase frequency

Limit repeat purchases by signed-in customers and understand historical-order and simultaneous-checkout boundaries.

2 min read

Use Frequency limit to allow a matching purchase only once ever, once per year/month/week/day, or once in a custom period for the same logged-in customer. With No frequency limit, quantity, value, and weight limits are checked separately for each order.

Configure frequency

  1. Open an order, collection, product, or variant limit on General. Set its target scope and basic limit first.
  2. Under Frequency limit, select Once over all time, Once per year/month/week/day, or Custom time period.
  3. For a custom period, enter a value greater than zero and select years, months, weeks, days, or hours.
  4. Review the automatically enabled Require customer login. On Translation, edit the Frequency limit message and login message if needed.
  5. Save, check checkout validation, then test two matching orders in sequence with the same test account.

Example: One purchase per customer per month

Set Product A to a maximum of one unit per order and choose Once per month. After a signed-in customer completes an order matching this rule in the current period, another attempt to buy A should trigger the frequency limit. Another customer's history is tracked separately.

Earlier orders are not backfilled: Orders placed before this rule is created do not count. Frequency is tracked by customer account and does not apply to guest checkout. Near-simultaneous checkouts, such as two browser tabs paying at nearly the same time, can occasionally slip through because of platform synchronization delays. If a paid duplicate is detected afterward, the app tags the order for manual review and cancellation; it never automatically cancels a paid order. Email alerts require notifications to be enabled in Preferences and a verified recipient address.

For how the basic threshold is checked within each order, see minimum and maximum limits.
