PURCHASE LIMITS / GUIDE 11

How to set product access rules

Use blacklists or whitelists to control who can buy selected products, with tags, guest emails, and country conditions.

2 min read

A product access rule decides who may buy the targeted products. A blacklist blocks matching buyers; a whitelist allows only matching buyers. Use it for bans, member access, or customer and geographic restrictions. It has no ordinary quantity cap. For “how many units,” use a product limit.

Create a blacklist or whitelist

  1. Open Product access rules (/access-rules) from the app's primary navigation, create a rule, and enter a Rule name.
  2. Select Blacklist or Whitelist under Access type.
  3. Under Apply to, choose all products, specific products, or specific collections. A whitelist must target specific products or collections; All products is unavailable for it.
  4. Add included or excluded customer tags for logged-in buyers, and included or excluded emails for guest checkout. You can also set allowed or blocked countries, login requirements, and active dates.
  5. Read the Rule effect preview to confirm the product scope and buyer audience. Activate the rule and Enable checkout validation, then save. Save the blocking messages in Translation.

Example: Block one customer group from a product

Select Product A, create a Blacklist, and add the included customer tag restricted. A logged-in buyer with that tag trying to purchase one unit of A is blocked. A logged-in buyer without the tag can buy one unit of A. Product B is outside this rule's scope. To block guest email blocked@example.com as well, add it separately under Include emails.

Logged-in buyers are matched by tags; guests are matched by their checkout email. A logged-in buyer is not matched by the guest email list, even if the account email appears there. An all-products blacklist with no audience conditions blocks purchases across the store, so review the effect preview before saving. Country conditions apply to both buyer types; see email and country restrictions.

Finally, test matching and nonmatching buyers with products inside and outside the scope. Confirm checkout validation is enabled.
