PURCHASE LIMITS / GUIDE 09

How to set Shopify variant limits

Limit the quantity, value, or weight of a specific Shopify product variant without counting its other options.

2 min read

A variant limit measures only the selected product option's quantity, value, or weight. Other variants of the same product are outside that rule. This is useful when one size or color needs its own cap. For rules across products, see product limits.

Create the rule

  1. Open Limits → Select limit type → Variant limits and enter a Rule name.
  2. Use Select variants to choose the target. During creation, you can select several variants and create a separate rule for each; an existing rule keeps its original variant target.
  3. Choose quantity, value, or weight under Limit type, then set a minimum, maximum, or both.
  4. Configure customer conditions, schedule, purchase frequency, messages, and Exclusive purchase if needed.
  5. Enable the rule's Enable checkout validation and save. Check and save the violation message in Translation.

Example: At most two blue variants

Set Maximum quantity = 2 for Product A's Blue variant. A cart with two Blue units and three Red units still meets this rule's Blue cap. Increasing Blue to three units triggers the rule. Whether three Red units are allowed depends on any other applicable rules.

You cannot retarget an existing rule to another variant; duplicate it as a new rule instead. Exclusive purchase controls what may share a cart with the selected variant and does not cap its quantity by itself. See exclusive purchase.

After saving, test the target variant, another variant, and an over-limit cart. Confirm checkout validation is on.

Use a test product or cart to check the outcome before applying this setup across your store.
