If a limit message is missing, first confirm that the test cart actually matches the rule, then check the Theme App Embed in the published theme. Storefront messaging and checkout blocking are separate parts of the setup: checkout validation can work even when theme embedding or page compatibility prevents a storefront message.
Check these items in order
- Rule status: Confirm that the rule is active and the test is within its effective time window.
- Rule target: Check that the product, collection, or variant is in scope and not excluded. Make sure the cart reaches the configured warning trigger.
- Customer conditions: A tag, login requirement, guest email, or country condition may exclude your test customer.
- Theme embed: Follow Enable the Theme App Embed for the published theme. Save in the theme editor, then refresh the app status.
- Page location: Test both the product page and full cart. If one works and the other does not, record the page and entry point; themes can render them differently.
- Message translation: Check the rule's Translation page for a message in the language used by the test storefront.
Retest with one simple case
Use an active “maximum two units” rule for a target product. With the same test customer, change that product from two units to three. Inspect the product page, full cart, and cart drawer. If neither quantity shows a storefront message but three units are blocked at checkout, focus on theme embedding and storefront compatibility.
What to send to support
Include the store domain, published theme name, affected page URL, rule name, product or variant, test quantity, customer state, expected result, actual result, and screenshots. A record of tests across entry points makes the issue easier to reproduce.
If the message appears but an over-limit cart can still check out, use Troubleshoot checkout not being blocked.
Use a test product or cart to check the outcome before applying this setup across your store.
