PURCHASE LIMITS / GUIDE 10

How to set a cumulative sales limit

Cap cumulative sales of selected products or variants and understand sold, reserved, and available units.

2 min read

A total limit sets a cumulative quantity cap for selected products or variants across orders. It tracks sold units, active checkout reservations, and remaining availability. This differs from an order limit, which evaluates one cart at a time.

Create a total limit

  1. Open Limits → Select limit type → Total limits and enter a Rule name.
  2. Choose Product or Variant under Scope type, then select the target products or variants.
  3. Enter a cumulative Limit quantity greater than zero.
  4. Set customer tags, a login requirement, active dates, messages, and Enable checkout validation as needed.
  5. Save and activate the rule. Review Sold, Reserved, and Available for each target, and save the sold-out message in Translation.

Example: A release capped at 100 units

Suppose the target has Limit quantity = 100, with 96 sold and two actively reserved. Two units remain available. A customer requesting two units stays within the current quota; a request for three exceeds it. Products outside the selected targets do not consume this target's quota.

Reserved represents active checkout reservations, not paid orders. Use Clear cautiously only while investigating abnormal reservations, never as a routine refresh: it releases all active reservations for the target, and customers currently checking out may need to restart. Check the target and reservation state first. The cap must be greater than zero. To prohibit purchase, use a product access rule.

After saving, test quantities around the remaining quota and confirm checkout validation is enabled. Reservations can change availability during testing, so use the latest figures on the page.

Keep going

Use a test product or cart to check the outcome before applying this setup across your store.
