PURCHASE LIMITS / GUIDE 08

How to set individual or combined Shopify product limits

Set Shopify product quantity, value, or weight limits and compare per-product, per-variant, and combined calculations.

2 min read

A product limit caps the quantity, value, or weight of matching products. You can evaluate each product separately or combine the selected products. For quantity limits, you can also evaluate each variant separately.

Create a product limit

  1. Open Limits → Select limit type → Product limits.
  2. Enter a Rule name and choose all products, specific products, or products in selected collections. Use the available exclusion control for products that should not match.
  3. Choose quantity, value, or weight, then enter a minimum, maximum, or both.
  4. Choose per-product or combined evaluation. For a quantity cap on each option of a product, enable per-variant evaluation where available.
  5. To require a product to be purchased without other products in the cart, enable Exclusive purchase. This does not, by itself, cap the number of units of that product; add a maximum quantity if you need one.
  6. Configure customer conditions, schedule, frequency, messages, and Enable checkout validation as needed. Save the rule.

Example: No more than two units of each product

Select Products A and B, set Maximum quantity = 2, and evaluate each product separately. A cart with two units each of A and B meets both caps. Increasing A to three units triggers the rule for A.

With combined evaluation instead, two units of A plus two of B total four and exceed the same cap of two. Review the rule preview during setup, then verify the result in a real cart.

For a cap on the entire order, use an order limit. To ban a product, use a Product Access Rule instead of a zero maximum.

Before using the rule with customers, check its target products, calculation mode, active status, and checkout validation switch. Then test in-scope, out-of-scope, and over-limit carts.

Use a test product or cart to check the outcome before applying this setup across your store.
