What Is Shopify Virtual Inventory? Raw Materials, Finished Goods, and Bundles Explained

Shopify's native inventory records quantities for product variants at locations. That number alone may not explain what you can sell when several products share one material or a kit requires several components. Soply Virtual Inventory models those relationships, calculates availability, and can validate purchases against it when the relevant rules are enabled.

Understand the three items involved

A raw material is a resource consumed by sales, such as fabric, wax, or packaging. Its stock can be maintained in Soply or read from a linked Shopify product. A finished-goods variant is the Shopify variant a customer buys; its Product Usage binding says how much material one sale uses. A bundle or kit connects a sales variant to existing component variants and their quantities per kit.

How availability is calculated

If 10 meters of fabric are available and a T-shirt uses 0.5 meter, that fabric supports 20 T-shirts when no other limit applies. Other T-shirt variants bound to the same fabric share that 10-meter pool. For a bundle, Soply checks each component: if a kit needs two bags of beans and one mug, whichever component supports fewer complete kits becomes the limit. Multi-location bundle availability is calculated at each location, without combining scattered components into one kit.

Separate calculation, sync, and validation

Soply can calculate Derived Availability. Whether that result is written to Shopify's native inventory depends on separate stock sync settings. To limit an excessive checkout quantity, also check Inventory rules → Cart & checkout validation. The optional storefront cart quantity control is a separate theme feature with its own status.
