How to Create an App-Managed Raw Material and Set Opening Stock

Use an app-managed raw material when you want to maintain its quantity in Soply and let one or more Shopify products draw from the same stock. This guide uses a material with 10 meters of fabric as an example.

Before you create the material

Decide on a recognizable name, an optional internal SKU, a unit, and the current stock quantity. Choose one base unit for usage and deductions. For example, record fabric in meters rather than alternating between meters and centimeters.

Create the raw material

1. Open Raw Materials and choose Add Raw Material. You can also use the app-managed material creation path on Home.
2. Under Inventory source, choose App-managed stock.
3. Enter a Name. Add an SKU if your team uses one to identify the material.
4. Set the Base unit and enter the current amount in Opening stock. For this example, use meters and enter 10.
5. Review Status. Keep the material in Draft while you finish configuration, or select Active when it is ready to participate in rules.
6. Save the material. If Product Usage is available on the form, you can also select a product variant and enter its usage now. Otherwise, add the relationship after the material is saved.

Verify the new material

Return to Raw Materials and find your entry. Check its name, inventory source, quantity, and status. In the material details, distinguish Recorded stock from Available to use. Recorded stock is the amount saved in Soply; available stock can change as orders consume or reserve material. With no other activity, both normally start from the opening quantity.

Creating the material alone does not tell Soply which Shopify products use it. To limit a sales variant based on this stock, add a product binding and set Consumption Per Unit.

Adjust stock later

Use Adjust stock from the material list. Enter a positive number to add stock or a negative number to remove it, and select a reason. If 2 meters of the original 10 are scrapped, enter -2. After saving, review Available to use and the availability of bound products.

An order's material consumption is different from a manual stock adjustment. Use raw material inventory snapshots and operation audit logs when you need to trace a change.

Troubleshooting

A product's availability did not change. Check that the material is active, the correct product variant is bound, Consumption Per Unit is greater than zero, and Raw material mode is enabled in Inventory rules.

Will this create Shopify inventory? Creating the app-managed material records stock in Soply. If you separately enable stock sync for products that use this material, review which Shopify variants and locations the sync will update.
