How to Bind Shopify Product Variants to a Raw Material

A raw material affects a sales variant only after you tell Soply how much of that material one sale consumes. Several variants can share one material, and a variant may require more than one material.

Before you begin

Create the raw material and make sure the Shopify product variants already exist. Work out the material needed for one unit of each variant. Use the material's base unit: if fabric is tracked in meters, enter the fabric used per T-shirt in meters.

Option 1: Add usage from the material

1. Open Raw Materials and edit the material.
2. Go to Product Usage and choose Add Product Usage.
3. Select the Shopify product variants in the product picker.
4. Enter Consumption Per Unit for each variant. The value must be greater than zero and represent material used by one sale.
5. Review the binding's active status, Finished Goods Stock (Pre-produced), and whether sales may continue when material is insufficient. Save the changes.

For a large catalog, Advanced Add Product Usage and Bulk Add by Filter can help select variants. After using a bulk default, check variants with different sizes or pack quantities individually.

Option 2: Start from Product Bindings

Open Product Bindings, find and expand the product, and choose Configure or edit the target variant's bindings. Add the material, enter usage per unit, and save. The page's binding-status filters can help you find variants that are still unbound.

Check an example

Suppose White fabric has 10 meters Available to use. An adult T-shirt uses 0.8 meter; a children's T-shirt uses 0.5 meter. With no other limits, the adult variant alone supports floor(10 ÷ 0.8) = 12 sales, while the children's variant alone supports floor(10 ÷ 0.5) = 20 sales. Both draw from the same 10 meters. Do not add those two figures together as if each variant had its own stock pool.

Verify the binding

Return to the material's Product Usage and check the variants, SKUs, usage values, and status. Then review the variants in Product Bindings and inspect their calculated availability.

If a product is missing, confirm that the Shopify variant still exists and review your search filters. If availability looks wrong, check the unit, usage per unit, other material bindings, and the material's Available to use amount. Raw material snapshots can help explain stock changes.
